The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has recently introduced some significant changes in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season. The most notable change is the introduction of the Impact Player Rule. Let's take a closer look at the new IPL 2023 rules and what they mean for the teams and the tournament.
Impact Player Rule
The Impact Player Rule is a new addition to the IPL 2023 rules. It allows the teams to introduce an Impact Player during the match who can have a significant impact on the game's outcome. However, there are some restrictions that the teams need to follow while using the Impact Player.
The Impact Player can only be an Indian player unless there are less than four overseas players in the Playing XI. Only an overseas player who is part of the four substitutes named in the team sheet can be used as an Impact Player. If a team introduces an overseas player as an Impact Player in a match, in no circumstance can a fifth overseas player take the field.
Teams need to pick four substitutes along with the playing X1 during toss time, and out of four, only one can be used as an impact player. The captain will nominate the Impact Player, who can be introduced before the start of the innings, or after the completion of the over, or after the fall of a wicket or after the batter retires anytime during the over.
A player who is replaced by an Impact Player ("Replaced Player") can no longer take part in the remainder of the match and is also not permitted to return as a substitute fielder. The BCCI confirms that an Impact Player cannot act as a captain.
Both teams are allowed to use one Impact Player per match. It is, however, not compulsory. It is up to teams whether they want to use the Impact Player or not. If a player gets injured while fielding mid-over, he can no longer take part in the match if the team introduces an Impact Player to replace him. In case of an injury to the Impact Player during the match, a substitute fielder is allowed to field in place of an injured player only if umpires are satisfied. The substitute shall not bowl or act as captain. Penalty time for the batting and fielding teams will apply to the player off the field for the substitute as per the playing conditions.
Other New IPL 2023 Rules
Apart from the Impact Player Rule, there are other new rules that the teams need to follow in IPL 2023. Here are some of them:
Multiple Team Sheets
In IPL 2023, team captains can walk in with two different team sheets before handling their final playing 11 after the toss. Depending on the toss result, the teams can pick their best 11 after the toss. But till last season, the captains have to exchange the teams before the toss. This new rule allows teams to make strategic changes based on the pitch and weather conditions.
Two DRS for Each Inning
In IPL 2023, each team will get two Decision Review System (DRS) reviews for each inning. Players can take reviews for wides and no-balls in IPL, making it easier to avoid controversial umpiring decisions.
New Playing Conditions
The IPL 2023 season will see some new playing conditions as well. Over rate penalty of only four fielders outside the 30-yard circle for every over not completed in the allocated time. Unfair movement of the wicketkeeper or a fielder will result in a dead ball and 5 penalty runs.
